A Partner in Perth’s Corporate Insolvency division, Carl joined Hall Chadwick in March 2013 as a recovery and reconstruction specialist.
Carl was registered as a liquidator in August 2005, just after being named the Western Australian Young Credit Professional of the Year. He was an original board member for the Turnaround Management Association WA division, as well as a councillor for the Australian Institute of Credit Management for a number of years.
Insolvency is a perfect fit for Carl’s interest in investigation and identifying the causes of financial distress. Identifying these issues allows Carl to assist clients navigate out of the red and back to black. His investigations have been the subject of Court proceedings resulting in asset freezing orders, international extradition orders and successful prosecution of fraud and theft charges.
Carl’s other professional interest has been the Personal Property Securities Act and its interaction with insolvency matters. He notes that whilst the Act has many opportunities for secured creditors to incorrectly secure their rights, the test for those errors generally arise in distressed circumstances where the asset is the subject of recovery claims from either the secured creditor, liquidator or administrator.
With over 17 years experience in the insolvency industry in Western Australia, Carl has been involved with companies in various industries, including import / export, transport, retail and wholesale, investment, labour hire, mining services, construction, real estate, mineral exploration and road safety.
Carl has also been published in the Australian Insolvency Journal and regularly writes and presents papers for Legalwise Seminars and other technical groups.
A passionate rugby supporter, Carl has coached a number of club and representative teams to success and sees corporate turnaround in a similar light – identify your strengths and weaknesses, support the strengths, work with the weaknesses and develop a game plan that all team players can understand and contribute to. “A team isn’t just the 15 players on the field – a team runs from that 15 to the bench, to the coaches and even the water boys. Align your goals so that each person is pulling in the same direction and success will follow.”
